Physical Description: Mark is of average height, about 6’, and average build. He is in shape and no weakling, but he won't be joining leagues with any professional body builders either. He has a fair complexion, slightly shaggy dirty blond hair, and expressive brown eyes which he finds are extraordinarily effective in conveying an irresistible “puppy dog” face.

What Am I like?
Despite his knack for attracting angst and the drama queen (king?) nature all good thespians maintain, Mark genuinely loves life. In general, he is a highly social and amiable person. He loves to talk, laugh, perform, and be the center of attention. He’s highly optimistic, but not to a naïve or blind extent. It’s more in the sense that he is ready and willing to face a difficult situation, even if it means being immediately knocked to the ground. Of course, on the occasion that something really brings him down- especially involving the people he cares about- he tends to soak in the melodrama and can be just as melancholy and sarcastic as the rest of them. Though he is very close with his parents, especially his mother, since his father still lives in France, he is also generally very independent.

What's My Story?
Mark was born in a small town just outside of Paris, France to Clarisse and Michel Devereux. An only child, he learned at an early age that the spotlight was his favorite place to be. Mark was the apple of his parents’ eye and, as they were always mildly wealthy, Mark never wanted for anything. One could go as far as to say he was a bit spoiled. Luckily, when he was seven, his love for attention found a constructive use at the community theater. His parents had signed him up for the summer musical out of mere curiosity, and as it turned out, Mark was hooked from the moment the curtain rose.

Of course, childhood is rarely ever perfect. Mark’s first example of this came when he was eight years old, and his parents began to argue. Then they began to fight. A year went by, and suddenly there was a lawyer and a lot of packing, and Mark and his mother were moving to Vancouver, Canada where his cousins lived and leaving Daddy behind. It took him a while to understand what getting a “divorce” meant, and he was upset about it, of course, especially the idea of seeing his father so much less. He doesn’t, however, remember ever having the fairly common “it’s my fault it happened” or “they don’t love me” reaction. Eventually, he managed to settle into his new life, and his family’s financial status allowed him to visit his father fairly often.

As far as languages go, he moved away from France at such a young age that he only has a trace of the accent left. He is still basically fluent in French, but he is more comfortable with English and only uses his native tongue when he is in its home country, and sometimes when speaking with his mother, though he’ll often switch back and forth between French and English during these conversations. Also, a French word or two tends to sneak into his vocabulary at times. He briefly pondered breaking himself of this habit, but as he learned early in his teenage years, speaking French is a sure way to attract girls. And at thirteen, he had no reason to assume he didn’t want to attract girls.

His good looks, cheerful and friendly demeanor, and easygoingness made for easy popularity as school went on. It wasn’t really something for which he strived, but he’d be lying if he acted like he didn’t enjoy it. In 8th grade, however, he met the boy who would prove the saying “opposites attract.” It was the first day of high school when Mark forgot to look in front of him while walking and crashed straight into Anthony Wong, the quiet academic who would become his best friend and more.

The educational aspect of school had never been Mark’s strongest point, but he was no moron. He knew he’d have to do well to get anywhere in life unless by some miracle the acting thing panned out, so he worked as hard as he could. He usually pulled off A’s and high B’s, but until Tony came along, he had never seen above a C in math. Tony offered to tutor him in the subject, and low and behold, Mark received a B that term, and an A the next. Not only was he thrilled with this development, but he quickly found that he loved spending time with Tony. He was quiet, but he was also brilliant, funny, and completely different from anyone Mark had ever known. It wasn’t long before the pair was inseparable, and no matter how many times Tony had the shit kicked out of him or how many snide comments other kids made, nothing was going to change that. Until of course, something did.

The summer before tenth grade, Mark came back from visiting his dad to find that Tony had changed. And Mark liked what he saw. As the months went on, it became harder and harder to brush off this new awareness, especially since he knew in the back of his mind that this wasn’t the first time he’d seen another male in this light. But he had always been able to ignore it before. Now that the other male was his best friend, always right there beside him, it didn’t seem possible. On the night of Tony’s 16th birthday party- the one that Mark had felt it would be just so brilliant to throw- the friends ended up snuggling, completely smashed. And Mark had liked it. Liked it so much that he didn’t even care about the gossip and rumors that flew around the school after that.

Then came June, and his own birthday party, and the Truth or Dare game that changed everything. There was more drinking, more cuddling, and finally, the Kiss. At this point, Mark had kissed his fair share of girls, completely sober, no less. But none of them could have compared to the messy, awkward, drunken lip-lock he shared with his best friend that night. And despite it scaring the shit out of him, he knew as soon as their lips touched that there was no stopping this train now. And there wasn’t. All summer, Mark and Tony continued their “not-relationship” behind closed doors and away from prying eyes. Despite the spouts of anger and confusion in between, Mark had never felt so alive in his life.

Of course, late-night rendezvous and stolen moments when a parent left the room could only last for so long. At the end of the summer, Tony’s mother entered Tony’s room to find Mark’s tongue down her son’s throat. Mark tried desperately to fix things between them, but it was no use. Tony shut himself back into his airtight glass box and refused to acknowledge Mark’s presence in school. As for Mark’s homelife, his mother of course found out what had happened. She was worried about her son, but ultimately accepted what he wasn’t even sure was a part of him yet. She agreed to let him try to sort out his feelings for himself before looking into the schools or any “treatments.” Gossip had, as gossip tends to do, spread to his schoolmates, however, and they were not so willing to let things go. His place in the high school social pyramid was too well established to be totally destroyed, but people talked, slurs were uttered, and snide remarks became an every hour occurrence. Mark put on a brave face and withstood it all, but he all but gave up when he returned from Winter break to find that Tony was gone. It didn’t take a genius to figure out what had happened.

For two more months, Mark endured the hellhole, determined not to let this ruin his life. He sent Tony a text message at least twice a day, begging him to call or at least text back, needing to know that there was a chance he hadn’t lost the most important friendship he’d ever had. One day during lunch, he suddenly realized that he was done. Finished. He just couldn’t take the whispers in the halls or the mocking jokes or sideways glances anymore. He needed to be somewhere where he wouldn’t have to take care not to look up for a second in the boys’ locker room. He needed to be somewhere comfortable and safe. And most of all, he needed the only person who had ever understood him fully.

He’d put down his tray right then, got up without a word, and left the school without looking back. He told his mother he wanted to transfer to Goldfinch, and he was packed up and on a plane two days later. Mark had no idea what to expect, but he did know that everything about this felt right. He would do everything he could to win back his friendship- or whatever- with Tony, but whatever happened, he was going to make the best of his new life here. Maybe Tony would never look at him again, but he could at least meet some new people and figure out what the hell was going on with his own heart and hormones.

And at the very least, he hears Goldfinch Academy has a kick-ass theater program.
